Summary
Singin’ in the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item but, behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.
Roles
DON LOCKWOOD : (Male; G2-Ab4) A suave Hollywood actor and dancer. Cosmo’s best friend and Lina’s regular co-star. Must dance well, tap at an intermediate level or above.
KATHY SELDEN : (Female; G3-F5) An earnest, talented actress with wit and charm. She falls in love with Don and performs as Lina’s speaking and singing voice. Must dance well, tap at an advanced beginning level or above.
LINA LAMONT : (Female; C4-Eb5) A slow-witted silent film diva with a big personality and a harshly unpleasant voice. She is Don’s regular co-star. Must move well.
Non-Gender Specific Roles:
COSMO BROWN : (C3-Ab4) A wacky and playful on-set pianist for silent films. Don’s best friend and former dance partner. Must dance well, tap at an intermediate level or above. Any physical tricks or stunts welcome!
ZELDA ZANDERS: A flapper socialite and actor on their ninth marriage, they are Lina’s friend and informant. Must dance. Doubles in Ensemble.
R.F. SIMPSON : (50-65; Must sing) A successful, magnanimous, film producer. Head of the studio who leads the other characters in creating a new movie musical.
ROSCOE DEXTER : (30-50; Must sing) A famous film director with theatrical mannerisms and tendencies. Frequently frazzled and works with Lina and Don.
ROD : (20-45; Must sing) An excitable film agent bordering on manic. They work for Simpson. Doubles in the ensemble.
PRODUCTION SINGER : (Db3-Ab4) The lead tenor in Monumental Pictures’ first movie musical. Doubles in the ensemble.
There are a significant amount of featured roles: acting, singing and especially dancing for the ensemble. At least a beginning level of tap dancing is requested for the ensemble, but not mandatory.
