AUDITION INFORMATION

Please prepare 32-48 bars of a song that shows your range and expression. Your song should be in the style of the show, and with sheet music in the correct key. No recordings, please. An accompanist will be provided. Bring a headshot, resume, and conflict calendar through February 20.

If you are unable to make either audition date, video audition submissions will be accepted until August 5 at walter@southbaymt.com

The rehearsal calendar is compact and fast-paced. Therefore, conflict calendars will be an important consideration when making casting decisions. Please give us complete conflict information. If you are already obligated to another show that will cause conflicts with our rehearsal schedule, or if you are auditioning for multiple shows that perform in the same time frame as ours, please let us know. Only minor conflict schedules will be accepted. Conflicts during January are likely to be deal breakers.

SBMT Casting Commitment

South Bay Musical Theatre is actively re-shaping our company to be reflective of the community it serves. We practice non-traditional and identity-conscious casting in all our productions. We are seeking and highly encouraging all actors to submit, regardless of race/ethnicity/caste, disability, body type, age, orientation, or gender/gender identity.  All cast are volunteers with a performance per diem equal to $250 total.

SUMMARY

Lovers reunite, passions reignite, and new romances blossom in 1900s Sweden. On a magical night that “smiles three times,” an aging actress, a married virgin, a sex-starved divinity student, a jaded lawyer, and a buffoonish count find themselves hilariously tangled in a web of love affairs. Stephen Sondheim’s ravishing score, set entirely in variations of waltz time, explores the universal subject of love across the generations. The winner of four Tony Awards with a score that includes his famous “Send in the Clowns,” A Little Night Music is a witty and moving masterpiece that has forever entranced the world of theatre.

ROLES

Désirée Armfeldt

A self-absorbed actress tiring of the “glamorous” life of touring the Swedish countryside. She becomes entangled in a love triangle with the Count and Fredrik.
Gender: female
Age: 40 to 50
Vocal range: F#3 to Ab5

Fredrik Egerman

Middle-aged lawyer who is married to his second wife, Anne, and has a son, Henrik, from his first marriage. Having a mid-life crisis but he doesn’t know it.
Gender: male
Age: 40 to 50
Vocal range top: A2 to E4

Fredrika Armfeldt

Désirée’s witty daughter who is very self-contained and formal with the precise diction of the convent-trained.
Gender: female
Age: 12 to 15
Vocal range: C4 to Eb5

Madame Armfeldt

Désirée’s elderly mother. A former courtesan, she is brutally honest and quite wealthy, having amassed a tidy fortune as a result of her discreet encounters with the crowned heads of Europe.
Gender: female
Age: 70 to 85
Vocal range: C3 to F#4

Anne Egerman

Giddy and virginal; naive at times. A breathtakingly gorgeous child bride and Fredrick’s new wife.
Gender: female
Age: 18 to 21
Vocal range: G#3 to Ab5

Henrik Egerman

Fredrik’s gloomy son. He is serious but confused, as he studies for the Lutheran priesthood.
Gender: male
Age: 18 to 21
Vocal range: G3 to B4

Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm

A vain and arrogant military officer; splendidly proportioned but ferociously jealous. He is Désirée’s newest lover and nowhere near as clever as he thinks he is.
Gender: male
Age: 35 to 45
Vocal range top: G3 to F#4

Countess Charlotte Malcolm

The Count’s sardonic, mistreated, and downtrodden wife. Possessed of a rapier wit.
Gender: female
Age: 30 to 45
Vocal range: G3 to F5

Petra

Anne’s earthy maid and closest confidante. She believes in living in the moment and never passes up an opportunity for a quick rustle in the hay.
Gender: female
Age: 20 to 30
Vocal range top: F#3 to F5 (belter)

Frid

Madame Armfeldt’s butler. He knows much but says little. Has a rustle in the hay with Petra.
Gender: male
Age: 25 to 45
A non-singing role

The Liebeslieder Singers

Three women and two men who function as storytellers and comment in song on the goings on, often with worldly wisdom and great humor. They must have superb legit voices. One tenor, one bass/baritone. One rather showy soprano (her range is as high as you’d like) and two mezzos.
Age: Timeless. In the same ballpark as Désirée and Fredrik would be nice.

Malla

Désirée’s maid. A non-speaking, comic role for a performer who has a good sense of physical comedy.
Gender: female
Age: none specified

Osa, Bertrand, and other Servants

Madame Armfeldt has lots of staff. These non-speaking roles do sing in the Act One finale, and otherwise assist with all scene changes and small moments throughout the play. They will likely understudy one or more of the principals.
Gender: all
Age: none specified
