South Bay Musical Theatre’s 61st season will be a “Season of Love,” with a trio of blockbuster musicals celebrating platonic, romantic, and familial love.
Kicking off the season is Rent, a rock musical that tells a story of a group of young artists who are struggling to survive in the harsh reality of New York City in the 1990s. They are bound together by their dreams, their struggles, and most importantly, their deep love for each other. At the heart of Rent is a message of acceptance and support that transcends boundaries of race, gender, and sexual orientation. The show’s iconic song “Seasons of Love” asks the question, “How do you measure a year?” The answer is love. Rent reminds us that chosen families and platonic love can be just as powerful as romantic relationships.
Next up is A Little Night Music, a romantic musical that explores the complexities of love and desire. Set in Sweden at the turn of the 20th century, the show follows a group of characters as they navigate the ups and downs of their romantic relationships. At the center of the story is a web of intertwining love affairs, both comical and tragic. The show’s beautiful score, including the famous “Send in the Clowns,” is a reflection of the characters’ deep emotions and inner struggles. A Little Night Music is a touching tribute to the transformative power of romantic love.
Finally, South Bay Musical Theatre is proud to present Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, a beloved musical about the power of family and the magic of childhood. Based on the classic children’s book by P.L. Travers and the iconic Disney movie, the show follows the adventures of a mysterious nanny, Mary Poppins, as she helps the Banks family rediscover the joy and wonder of life. The show’s upbeat score includes classics like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Step in Time.” Mary Poppins is a celebration of familial love and the power of imagination to transform our lives.
The Saratoga Civic Theater will once again be the home of South Bay Musical Theatre’s productions. The theater, located at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga, California, provides an intimate setting for these three larger-than-life shows. The venue has hosted countless memorable performances over the past six decades, and SBMT is proud to call it home.
