On a sweltering summer day in New York City, music spills from the corner bodega, laughter echoes from the fire escapes, and every block seems to hold a story. That’s the world of In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning love letter to his neighborhood. Long before Hamilton took the world by storm, Miranda introduced audiences to a vibrant community full of dreams, traditions, and tough choices. This spring, South Bay Musical Theatre invites you to step into that neighborhood and feel the heartbeat of Washington Heights right here in Saratoga.

Set over the course of three transformative days, In the Heights blends salsa, merengue, hip-hop, and Broadway into a fresh, joyous, and deeply human musical. We meet Usnavi, a bodega owner with big dreams; Nina, a first-generation college student returning home; and a community whose lives intersect in moments of humor, heartbreak, and celebration. As rhythms pulse and stories unfold, the show reminds us that home isn’t just a place, it’s the people we share it with.

Our production will be extra-special because the greater San Jose region has deep roots in the immigrant community. Directed by Dave Leon, In the Heights will feature a wealth of talent drawn from the South Bay Area’s diverse heritage: artists and actors who bring authenticity, heart, and lived experience to this story. Winner of four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Miranda’s work captures the energy of a neighborhood in motion, where change brings both hope and uncertainty. From irresistible dance numbers to quiet, intimate ballads, every moment bursts with the soul of a community determined to carry its traditions forward.

For me, In the Heights feels like an invitation to see our own neighborhoods with fresh eyes. Whether you grew up in a small town, a bustling city, or somewhere in between, you’ll recognize the pull of home and the strength it gives us to chase our dreams. I can’t wait for our audiences to experience the joy, heart, and sheer exuberance of this production.
