Walking into a full theatre charged with the voltage of raw human energy anticipating a musical adventure is titillating, intoxicating, and just so much fun! Nothing compares to it.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of watching well over 3,000 of you go through that very experience with our production of The Sound of Music. Almost every performance was sold out, and every performance was astounding.
Here are a few takeaways that have me feeling hopeful and inspired for the future:
-
Live theatre is as impactful as ever. Tears, cheers, and standing ovations at every performance tell me that musical theatre is as magical and relevant today as when I was a boy. People need to come together and experience these stories with live actors and musicians more than ever.
-
The South Bay is bursting with talent. Throughout every intermission, I was met with a flurry of compliments for our performers and staff from astonished patrons, some longtime supporters, some returning for the first time since the 2020 shutdown, and some brand new to SBMT. All were amazed that professional-quality theatre was happening right here in our own backyard.
-
Young people are back. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing the joy in the eyes of the young people both on the stage and in the audience experiencing connection and community without a screen to get in the way. Everything is felt more deeply. Everything is more true. Authentic relationships are being built with the world and each other. Compassion is growing, and understanding is deepening. I could go on and on…
And we’ve only just begun the season! Rehearsals are in full swing for Let It Show: A Broadway Holiday Celebration. Treat yourself to the joy of the season with this magical event for children of all ages and families of all kinds. Flex subscriptions are still available, so you can see the rest of the season and add our concerts—all for a discounted price.
If The Sound of Music reminded you of the power of hope, then Let It Show will remind you of the power of joy. I can’t wait to share it with you.
