Patron Survey Insights

by Michael Paul Hirsch, Executive Director Over the past year, hundreds of SBMT patrons shared what they value most, and their responses are directly shaping our upcoming seasons and audience experience. I thought I would share a few interesting insights. Our core audience continues to be local, long-time supporters, while our fastest-growing segment is a younger, more diverse community. This is why we are expanding outreach to schools, senior communities, and local service organizations, to ensure SBMT remains welcoming, relevant, and reflective of the South Bay. The vast majority of you come to see all of the main stage productions [...]

Meet the main characters of On The 20th Century

by Doug Hughes, Director of Marketing Are you unfamiliar with the classic comedy On The 20th Century, which SBMT will be presenting in concert format April 18 and 19? Allow us to introduce you to a half dozen of the main characters. Oscar Jaffe (Walter M. Mayes) is an egomaniacal Broadway Director, scrambling to save his reputation from ruin and collapse by getting the great movie star and his former protégé and paramour, Lily Garland, to star in a play that he doesn’t even have a script for yet. The thought of getting Lily back, both as star and lover, fills [...]

All Aboard for a Rare Ride

Why We’re Bringing On the Twentieth Century to Life in Concert by Walter M. Mayes, Artistic Director Every season, I ask myself a simple question: What is the kind of musical experience our community deserves—but rarely gets? Sometimes the answer is a beloved classic. And sometimes it’s a glittering, madcap jewel that almost never sees the light of day. This year, that answer is On the Twentieth Century—a musical as bold, theatrical, and extravagantly funny as the train on which it is set South Bay Musical Theatre is presenting On the Twentieth Century as our annual fundraiser concert because it [...]

A few final performances—before the FOMO

by Doug Hughes, Marketing Director If you’ve been waiting for the "perfect time" to see our production of Little Women at the Saratoga Civic Theater, this is it. We are entering our final weekend, and the response from our community has been nothing short of—to quote from the show’s most well-known song—“Astonishing.” Bay Area Theatre Critic Eddie Reynolds called this production "magnificently sung and staged," noting that it "soars in every respect—musically, staging, directing, and acting". Our audiences are feeling it, too; we’ve heard from a patron who found the show "touching, humorous, and faithful," while another described it as [...]

Remembering Stacia Truesdale Stuart and Andrew Stuart

By Walter M. Mayes, Artistic Director, South Bay Musical Theatre Since I first became involved with South Bay Musical Theatre in 2008, no two people have embodied the warmth, generosity, and spirit of our community more than Stacia Truesdale Stuart and Andrew Stuart. They were not only talented performers and contributors to our theater family; they were beloved friends whose presence enriched every corner of SBMT and the other theater groups that were blessed with their participation.  Stacia and Andrew’s story began before most of us knew them as fixtures in our shows. They met in 2007 through theater—an early [...]

New Year, New Energy: What’s Ahead in 2026

by Michael Paul Hirsch, Executive Director I am no soothsayer or diviner, but I am empathetic and perceptive enough to sense a shift carrying us toward a far more optimistic trajectory in 2026. From my discussions with you in the lobby of the theater, I know you feel it too. Last week, Doug Hughes, our Marketing Director, wrote about reflecting on SBMT’s remarkable 2025. This week, I thought I would talk a bit about what is to come in the New Year and why I am feeling so hopeful. First off, the obvious: the season we are actively producing is [...]

A Grateful Look Back at an Unforgettable Year

By Doug Hughes, Director of Marketing As we turn the page on another calendar year, I want to pause for a moment to say thank you. Thanks to you, 2025 has been one of the most successful and meaningful years South Bay Musical Theatre has experienced in recent memory. From packed houses to powerful performances, from new traditions to renewed momentum, this past year reminded us why community theatre matters, and how much stronger it is when a community stands behind it. Rather than try to capture everything in words alone, we’ve put together a short video retrospective celebrating the [...]

Remembering C. Michael Traw

by Walter M. Mayes, Artistic Director, South Bay Musical Theatre Charles Michael Traw—“C. Michael” to everyone who knew him—passed away peacefully at the age of 85. His contributions to the Bay Area theater community were numerous and far-reaching. Over six decades, he directed, acted, and designed for countless productions, and also reviewed, taught, and served on the boards of several arts organizations. But it is as an indispensable member of the SBMT family that we remember him best. From the earliest days of the Saratoga Drama Group, he helped guide our organization—often shaping or selecting our seasons as a longtime [...]
