Inside The Grill: Set & Projection Design

By |2022-12-20T10:18:46-08:00December 8th, 2022|2022-2023 Season, Behind The Scenes, Photos|

The Spitfire Grill takes us to a small diner in Wisconsin, 1985.  Gilead is a fictional town, yet grounded in reality. When approaching the initial design work, a few elements were clear — an openness to the set and somehow, a way to bring the powerful impact of Wisconsin nature indoors.  The theme of nature as a healing resource is woven throughout the story. References in song titles, from “This Wide Woods” to “Ring Around the Moon,” and “Colors of Paradise” all hint to the way nature restores and revitalizes. We needed to feature mighty trees, with roots deeply planted, [...]

The governor’s signature could save community theatre

By |2022-09-13T10:06:09-07:00September 12th, 2022|Opinion|

by Sara K. Dean, Executive Artistic Director, South Bay Musical Theatre While live performances are definitely back, as anyone involved with community theater knows, the process of making art is now very different than it was three years ago. When we were allowed to reopen in spring 2021 after more than a year of virtual productions, it was thrilling. Finally, we could create art together—in person, and with audiences in the same room! We’ve had to learn, and relearn, many new tasks to keep artists, crew, and audiences safe. Frequent testing. Mask mandates at rehearsals and for our audience. And [...]

ON THE TOWN: A Story of Ballet, Battle, Broadway, and a Blockbuster

By |2022-03-31T18:46:43-07:00March 31st, 2022|2021-2022 Season, Behind The Scenes|

by Laura Anne Millar ...  On the Town—the “New York, New York” musical! A fast favorite since 1944, the making of this Broadway hit is a story in its own right. While many musical theatre and movie buffs already know and love the film adaptation, they may not realize this was actually the third iteration of the story. The Broadway musical was the second. Which brings us to our first subject: ballet! The Ballet Fancy Free premiered on April 18, 1944 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It was conceived and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and set [...]

In Praise of Understudies

By |2021-12-30T22:48:36-08:00December 29th, 2021|2021-2022 Season, Behind The Scenes|

by Sara K. Dean SBMT Executive Artistic Director The landscape for theatre has changed drastically over the past year. One of the ways that we at South Bay Musical Theatre have improved our practices is through the inclusion of understudies in all our productions. As many Broadway productions are hit with a wave of Covid, the positions of the understudy, swings, and standbys have been heralded as the “bedrock of Broadway.” SBMT recruited understudies most recently for Shout! The Mod Musical and Company, and we are building them into the soon-to-be-announced cast of On The Town. Some people refer to [...]

Nightly standing ovations and sold-out performances confirm SBMT commitment to quality

By |2018-08-24T20:39:27-07:00June 4th, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Discounts, Meet The Cast|

With just three sold-out performances left before South Bay Musical Theatre's production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame closes, it is abundantly clear that this show is a winner. Audiences raved about the show itself, the music, the orchestra, the choir, the cast, the costumes, the choreography, the set, and more! In fact, in emails received by SBMT (feedback@southbaymt.com), even the props got "props!" Thanks to all who attended—many of you multiple times—and for the enthusiastic response. Every performance has ended with the audience leaping to its feet for a standing ovation. STANDING OVATION AT THE SARATOGA CIVIC THEATER With kudos [...]

Kudos to the many, many hands behind the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ magic

By |2018-07-27T07:39:36-07:00May 22nd, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Photos, Video Link|

Musical theatre offers a tremendous range of entertainment options. Some shows are simple—with a unit set, a small cast, and perhaps a single keyboard accompanist. Others—like SBMT's current production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame—pull out all the stops to create an unforgettable spectacle. When you're working with a team of volunteers, that's a remarkable accomplishment, and now that the show has opened, we wanted to give a well-deserved shout-out to the huge team behind the scenes so you can more fully appreciate what goes into a production this rich. Such a massive production requires many hands to execute, and I [...]

KSAR-TV interviews members of ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ cast and crew

By |2018-07-27T07:44:13-07:00May 11th, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Video Link|

On Monday, May 7, Saratoga's community access television station, KSAR, paid a visit to the Saratoga Civic Theater to conduct a lengthy interview with members of the cast and crew of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The show is generating a lot of buzz in the local theatre community, and KSAR wanted to find out how South Bay Musical Theatre attracted such a large and talented team to stage a such a challenging work. The interview aired over cable TV on Thursday, May 10, and is linked below with the permission of the station. Interviewees include David Mister, who plays the [...]

A truly special show with a ‘deep bench’

By |2018-07-27T07:44:35-07:00May 8th, 2018|Behind The Scenes|

By Sasha Motalygo When a sports team (like the Golden State Warriors, for example) has star-level talent who are not in the starting lineup but still contribute mightily to the team’s success, they are said to enjoy a “deep bench.” That’s certainly the case for South Bay Musical Theatre’s upcoming production, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, which is blessed with a “deep bench” of extremely talented singers who have happily accepted chorus and ensemble roles. (Most of those in the choir are pictured above.) I interviewed several of them recently to find out why. It is widely known that South Bay [...]

Tale of an underdog: behind the scenes with The Hunchback of Notre Dame

By |2018-07-27T07:44:58-07:00April 28th, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Video Link|

The Phantom of the Opera. Beauty and the Beast. Wicked. Hairspray. The Hunchback of Notre Dame. What do all these musicals have in common? Three are set in France. Three are adaptations from movies. Two have been staged in the past by South Bay Musical Theatre. Three were written by Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz or both. All but one earned Tony Awards for best costuming. But the main thing all these critically acclaimed musicals have in common is their central theme of acceptance—as we discover inner beauty in a leading character whose external appearance causes fear, disgust, or ridicule. The phantom, the beast, [...]
