Congratulations to South Bay Musical Theatre’s seven finalists competing in the fifth annual Theatre Bay Area (TBA) Awards, which take place November 5, 2018. Theatre Bay Area is the third-largest regional theatre service organization in North America, and the TBA Awards, now in its fourth year, honors the excellence of professionally-oriented theatre in the Bay Area by offering a peer-based adjudication process and awards celebration. This year, more than 400 adjudicators cast approximately 10,000 ballots to evaluate over 300 productions staged by 122 participating Bay Area arts companies. With that much competition, this is indeed a great honor, and SBMT is [...]

On August 11, 2018, the South Bay Musical Theatre Board of Directors held a day-long retreat to make plans for the future of the organization and to discuss ways to build on the company's recent successes. Diane Milo (director/vocal director for the upcoming production of Mame) led a team-building exercise and brainstorming session to explore ways of increasing the company's reach into the local community we serve. By the end of the day, the team had filled a white board with a long list of tasks and talents that are required to maintain the affordable quality that we provide. Are YOU [...]

With just three sold-out performances left before South Bay Musical Theatre's production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame closes, it is abundantly clear that this show is a winner. Audiences raved about the show itself, the music, the orchestra, the choir, the cast, the costumes, the choreography, the set, and more! In fact, in emails received by SBMT (feedback@southbaymt.com), even the props got "props!" Thanks to all who attended—many of you multiple times—and for the enthusiastic response. Every performance has ended with the audience leaping to its feet for a standing ovation. STANDING OVATION AT THE SARATOGA CIVIC THEATER With kudos [...]

Kudos to the many, many hands behind the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ magic

By |2018-07-27T07:39:36-07:00May 22nd, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Photos, Video Link|

Musical theatre offers a tremendous range of entertainment options. Some shows are simple—with a unit set, a small cast, and perhaps a single keyboard accompanist. Others—like SBMT's current production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame—pull out all the stops to create an unforgettable spectacle. When you're working with a team of volunteers, that's a remarkable accomplishment, and now that the show has opened, we wanted to give a well-deserved shout-out to the huge team behind the scenes so you can more fully appreciate what goes into a production this rich. Such a massive production requires many hands to execute, and I [...]

A truly special show with a ‘deep bench’

By |2018-07-27T07:44:35-07:00May 8th, 2018|Behind The Scenes|

By Sasha Motalygo When a sports team (like the Golden State Warriors, for example) has star-level talent who are not in the starting lineup but still contribute mightily to the team’s success, they are said to enjoy a “deep bench.” That’s certainly the case for South Bay Musical Theatre’s upcoming production, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, which is blessed with a “deep bench” of extremely talented singers who have happily accepted chorus and ensemble roles. (Most of those in the choir are pictured above.) I interviewed several of them recently to find out why. It is widely known that South Bay [...]

Tale of an underdog: behind the scenes with The Hunchback of Notre Dame

By |2018-07-27T07:44:58-07:00April 28th, 2018|Behind The Scenes, Video Link|

The Phantom of the Opera. Beauty and the Beast. Wicked. Hairspray. The Hunchback of Notre Dame. What do all these musicals have in common? Three are set in France. Three are adaptations from movies. Two have been staged in the past by South Bay Musical Theatre. Three were written by Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz or both. All but one earned Tony Awards for best costuming. But the main thing all these critically acclaimed musicals have in common is their central theme of acceptance—as we discover inner beauty in a leading character whose external appearance causes fear, disgust, or ridicule. The phantom, the beast, [...]

So what is this show, "Peter and the Starcatcher"?

By |2018-01-14T15:05:00-08:00January 14th, 2018|Announcements, Behind The Scenes|

Even if you're a musical theater fan, you may not know much about South Bay Musical Theatre's winter production, "Peter and the Starcatcher," playing Jan. 27 through Feb. 17, 2018. So, what exactly is the show about? And why should you see it? "Peter and the Starcatcher" is the prequel to "Peter Pan." It tells the back story of the iconic boy who would not grow up, along with his familiar friends and adversaries who are portrayed so memorably in the classic tale. It’s a sprawling, swashbuckling adventure that will take you from the shores of Victorian England to the deck [...]
