Remembering Roberta Savage

By |2020-10-03T03:57:24-07:00October 3rd, 2020|Announcements|

South Bay Musical Theatre is sad to announce the passing of Roberta Savage, who was one of the founding members of our theatre group in 1962. Back then it was the Saratoga Federated Drama Group, then went on to become Saratoga Drama Group, and most recently South Bay Musical Theatre. Roberta was active with the group for more than 50 years, doing every imaginable task to help ensure that our productions were ready for opening night. She served multiple terms on the Board of Directors, was a staff member on virtually every production, and produced her last show (Bye Bye [...]

South Bay Musical Theatre is delighted to announce the seven members elected to our board: Nique Egan, Ed Hunter, Dave Leon, Raiña Parks, Sharon Peng, Dan Singletary, and Jay Steele. We had a particularly strong field of candidates this year, so our membership and board had to make difficult choices from a wealth of talent. The seven new members join the five sitting board members: Kevin Brownstein, Dallas Carter, Michael Hirsch, Jennifer Maggio, and Steve Sammonds. SBMT is deeply grateful for the service by our outgoing board members whose terms ended this year: Steve Allhoff, Barbara Heninger, Kimberly Kay, Jennifer [...]

Black Lives Matter

By |2020-06-15T23:39:02-07:00June 15th, 2020|Announcements, Board meetings|

The theatre community, including South Bay Musical Theatre, has come under intense scrutiny for its history of participation in discrimination and racial stereotypes. We are listening. Last month, we paused our 2020/2021 mainstage season and developed new virtual online programming, the SBMT eStudio. We see this as an opportunity to reexamine and reinvent how we deliver on our core values and expand our organization’s vision to amplify underrepresented and marginalized voices. We are engaging with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color) directors, leaders, and talent to bring more diverse stories and content to this platform. Information will be forthcoming as we [...]

Cast of She Loves Me brings familiar and new faces

By |2019-09-16T18:51:52-07:00September 9th, 2019|2019-2020 Season, Announcements, Meet The Cast|

SBMT is thrilled to announce the cast for our winter production of She Loves Me. Ben Hatch, who played Huckleberry Finn last season in Big River, returns as leading man Georg, a perfume shop employee who feuds with new saleswoman Amalia, played by Marie Putko. As fate would have it, the bickering colleagues respond to one another's "lonely hearts" ads in the newspaper and develop feelings for their anonymous-yet-amorous personas. If the plot sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the 1998 movie, You've Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan—or the classic film The Shop Around The Corner. Take [...]

What’s the secret sauce for selecting a successful season?

By |2019-07-01T17:08:34-07:00July 1st, 2019|2019-2020 Season, Announcements, Behind The Scenes, Board meetings, Video Link|

For community theatre companies like South Bay Musical Theatre, the annual exercise of selecting which shows to stage is a critical decision, and many competing factors come into play. Do you snap up that hot new show the moment it’s released, or lock down a perennial favorite? Do you stretch yourselves with a serious story, or stoop to silly slapstick? Do you pick a challenging title that will attract the best actors, or stick with a Broadway blockbuster that your patrons may prefer? Do you foray into adult fare, or favor the family friendly? Unfortunately, there is no universally correct answer—and [...]

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, South Bay Musical Theatre's first show of the 2019-2020 season, promises to be one that is unique and memorable. Casting was conducted over the past two weekends and the level of talent that turned out to audition was "off the charts." SBMT audiences will recognize many favorites from past shows, including David Mister, who played the role of Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame last spring, and Michael Hirsch, who played the role of The Duke in Big River this past January. They may also recognize RuthE Stein from her character role in [...]
