Kudos to the many, many hands behind the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ magic

Kudos to the many, many hands behind the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ magic

Musical theatre offers a tremendous range of entertainment options. Some shows are simple—with a unit set, a small cast, and perhaps a single keyboard accompanist. Others—like SBMT's current production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame—pull out all the stops to create an unforgettable spectacle. When you're working with a team of volunteers, that's a remarkable accomplishment, and now that the show has opened, we wanted to give a well-deserved shout-out to the huge team behind the scenes so you can more fully appreciate what goes into a production this rich. Such a massive production requires many hands to execute, and I [...]

A truly special show with a ‘deep bench’

By Sasha Motalygo When a sports team (like the Golden State Warriors, for example) has star-level talent who are not in the starting lineup but still contribute mightily to the team’s success, they are said to enjoy a “deep bench.” That’s certainly the case for South Bay Musical Theatre’s upcoming production, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, which is blessed with a “deep bench” of extremely talented singers who have happily accepted chorus and ensemble roles. (Most of those in the choir are pictured above.) I interviewed several of them recently to find out why. It is widely known that South Bay [...]

Tale of an underdog: behind the scenes with The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Phantom of the Opera. Beauty and the Beast. Wicked. Hairspray. The Hunchback of Notre Dame. What do all these musicals have in common? Three are set in France. Three are adaptations from movies. Two have been staged in the past by South Bay Musical Theatre. Three were written by Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz or both. All but one earned Tony Awards for best costuming. But the main thing all these critically acclaimed musicals have in common is their central theme of acceptance—as we discover inner beauty in a leading character whose external appearance causes fear, disgust, or ridicule. The phantom, the beast, [...]

SBMT unveils its new season on Jan. 30!

It’s #SBMTeaser Tuesday! Our next season of shows will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 30, but for the past five weeks, we've been posting hints on Facebook. Since we're down to the home stretch, here's a summary of all the clues published so far. Put on your deerstalker caps and see if you can guess! Hint #1 (published Dec. 26): Of our three shows, one has a one-word title, another has a two-word title, and the third has a three-word title—in that order. So what is this show, "Peter and the Starcatcher"?

Even if you're a musical theater fan, you may not know much about South Bay Musical Theatre's winter production, "Peter and the Starcatcher," playing Jan. 27 through Feb. 17, 2018. So, what exactly is the show about? And why should you see it? "Peter and the Starcatcher" is the prequel to "Peter Pan." It tells the back story of the iconic boy who would not grow up, along with his familiar friends and adversaries who are portrayed so memorably in the classic tale. It’s a sprawling, swashbuckling adventure that will take you from the shores of Victorian England to the deck [...]
